Garage Door Opener Troubleshooting: 12 Fixes Before You Call

By the Express Garage Doors Repair Texas service team · Updated 2026-08-26 · 24/7 dispatch: (877) 230-8949

Before you buy a new opener, run through this list. Roughly a third of the “dead opener” calls we take are solved in under five minutes — and we would rather you know that.

Remote not working

  1. Replace the battery (the #1 cause).
  2. Try the wall button. If the wall button works, it is the remote, not the opener.
  3. Re-program: press LEARN on the motor head, then the remote button within 30 seconds.
  4. Check the vacation/lock button on the wall console — it disables all remotes.
  5. Look for new LED bulbs or a nearby device causing radio interference.

Door reverses before it closes

  1. Clean and align the photo-eyes 4–6 inches off the floor; both LEDs should be steady.
  2. Clear obstructions and debris from the track path.
  3. Check the close-force and travel limit settings.
  4. Look for a pinched or stapled sensor wire.

Door reverses immediately after touching the floor

The down-limit is set too far, so the opener thinks it hit an obstruction. Adjust the down travel limit a quarter turn at a time.

Motor hums but the door does not move

Almost always a stripped drive gear, sheared trolley, or the opener straining against a broken spring. Unplug it and check the door’s manual balance before anything else.

Opener runs but the door stays put

The trolley is disconnected from the carriage — usually the emergency release was pulled. Re-engage by running the opener until the carriage re-latches, or reconnect manually per your manual.

Nothing at all — no lights, no sound

  1. Test the outlet with a lamp or phone charger.
  2. Check the GFCI and breaker.
  3. Inspect for a blown fuse or burned logic board (a burnt smell is diagnostic).
  4. Check whether a power surge took out the board — very common after Texas storms.

Blinking lights / error codes

Blink patterns are diagnostic. On LiftMaster and Chamberlain units, repeated blinking of the up/down LEDs usually points to a sensor circuit fault; on Genie, the count of blinks maps to specific errors in the manual. Count the blinks before you call — it speeds up the fix.

Door opens by itself

Check for a stuck wall button, a remote wedged in a car seat or bag, or an old opener without rolling codes picking up a neighbor’s signal. Any opener made before 1993 should be replaced for security and safety reasons regardless.

Loud, shaking chain drive

Lubricate the rail, tension the chain per spec, and consider converting to a belt drive. If your bedroom is above the garage, this upgrade is transformative.
